Tuesday Night GOFFee THANKS YOU!! And now.. Winter GOFFee!!

I would like to thank everyone who came out to Tuesday Night GOFFee this year! We had some great times, some sad times, some hardcore drama and gossip, but always the boots. We have teh sexiest boots ever! And boobs. And Rob's jello. And brownie bites nomnomnom..

GOFFee officially ends when the weather gets cold & unpredictable. We tried sitting outside in December a few years ago, freezing in our parkas and fishnets. Not a good idea lolz.. Of course, there will still be Goths chillin' at the Pruneyard Coffee Society on Tuesdays, but when it's cold & rainy be prepared to sit indoors and not smoke (as much). Oh noes!! Can it be done?!? :P

Rather than let the weekly GOFFee spirit languish, this year we are planning some wintertime mischief! Some of the Winter GOFFee Events in the works:

- Goth Bowling - Goths vs Furries/Klingons/Burners/Nazis..
- Miniature Goth-golf
- Stitch-n-Bitch (including a holiday gift-crafting!)
- Gothic poetry nights
- Goth Olympics
- Skari-oke
- Gothic Book Club
And the ever-popular:
- Goth-Olympics!!
Much GOFFee love and Happy Halloween!!

The impact of a radically slowing economy and high gas prices has effected everyone in our scenes
which have all scene some attrition in the past couple of years and have reduced the number of
people travelling between scenes in the two Bay Areas (Montery/SF)

So instead of just allowing inner city transport between scenes to just dwindle to nothing,
We want to be proactive about encouraging carpooling between cities in an effort to increase attendance
and lower people's costs.

Santa Cruz has moved it's long running (almost 10 years now) Goth club to Sunday nights, specifically
to make it possible for people in SC to visit Death Guild or B.A.G.G. in SF and people in the Bay Area to visit the BOX in
SC without there being a conflict.

Consequently, There are now at least three weekly goth events and several monthly goth/industrial events in the TWO BAY AREAS for people who want to get their goth/industrial on and several

**********************************
To save increasing travel expenses between cities we would like to propose
an EMAIL CARPOOLING scheme that is ANNONYMOUS , so that people
who want to participate can send their email addresses (and transportation needs and capabilities)
to one central location that is both ANNONYMOUS and hence ENTIRELY NON-SPAMMABLE.

This email list WILL NOT BE USED for publicizing events. It will ONLY BE FOR CARPOOLING SOLUTIONS.

So, anyone interested in either driving other carpoolers or catching a ride with someone who is driving already
from ANY LOCATION in the SOUTH BAY/SAN FRANCISCO/EAST BAY and MONTEREY BAY AREAS
should write to me off of this list at RICK WALKER looppool(at sign)cruzio(dot sign)com.

I will collate all the information ANNONYMOUSLY and people can then write to me directly when they want to either
1) go from one place to another without their own transportation but be willing to share gasoline expenses
2) be able to drive other carpoolers from one location to another and be able to share gasoline expenses

If you are interested, please take the time to:

INCLUDE THIS IN YOUR HEADER SO THAT I CAN COLLATE THE INFORMATION VERY QUICKLY:

subject line: "GOTH/INDUSTRIAL CARPOOL MEMBER: 1)owns car/doesn't own car 2)city you live in 3) clubs you want to visit theoretically'

***********************
How this will work is this:

If I recieve an email from someone who needs a ride, they will write in their header:

subject line: NEEDS RIDE 1)from what city 2) to what event 3) date of event

or , if they wish to drive and share gas expenses with someone else they should write

subject line: CARPOOLERS NEEDED 1) from what city 2) to what event/city 3) date of event.

I will immediately forward this message to the general carpooling list in a BLIND CARBON COPY so
that noones email will go out.

Then anyone can respond at their leisure and only the person seeking or offering a ride will know who has responded.

IMPORTANT!!!!!!!!! EMAILS not received in this form will be filtered by my spam filters
and WILL NOT REACH ME.

*****************************

IF YOU ARE INTERESTED IN PARTICIPATING:

The more lead time the better.
PLEASE SEND YOUR REQUESTS IN A MINIMUM of 48 HOURS AHEAD OF TIME if you want to connect with people.

*****************************
LAST NOTE: If you are cynical about this idea, please don't flame me. Just don't join.

Also, please consider that i'm volunteering to do a lot of work for free in an effort to help our
respective scenes grow and give me a break if it seems like nonsense to you.

Here's to a strong and growing Goth/Industrial scene in Northern California!!!!!!

To summarize my beliefs/thoughts in one laconic phrase, "Let the chaos unfold and the cards fall as they may."

Since I've been quiet for a number of years, you'll forgive the words that will follow. I have divided them into the following sections:

1. What is happening here exactly?
2. How do we disagree?
3. Who is to blame?
4. Leadership.
5. My thoughts on meetings.
6. Complacency in the scene and participation.
7. What needs to happen.
8. Final comments.

WHAT is happening here exactly?

We're in a time of transition. I love transitions and I love conflict. There is time for growth, reflection, renewing, and birth during right now. EMBRACE THIS PERIOD. All of the destruction that has happened recently is part of life and within all darkness there is always a blessing in disguise.

HOW do we disagree?

People in the scene have disagreed with me on this before and we will disagree on this right now. It is a healthy exchange and I see their point of view. They have always believed that the community functions best when all are invited to participate. Their beliefs operate well the majority of the time. They generally avoid consternation and conflict.

I have always believed that most people don't want to participate and/or do not have the capacity to do so in a meaningful way, so those who have the capacity to change things must act. My way works better when there is conflict, or a void of power, or when things have gotten so ugly that the world needs a good ænima.

WHO is to blame?

I find the excuses for failure people have made to be morbidly hilarious. The blame for the downfall of any club/event rests solely with those in command. The people in charge are responsible for how things have unfolded. Blaming crowds, or DeathGuild, or changes in average age of the scenesters, or Freddy, or anybody else other than promoters and DJs for the current state of affairs is illogical. When things go well, the promoters and DJs receive the praise. When things go poorly, they should be shamed.

Good promoters/DJs run an event. Great promoters/DJs can run events. Great promoters/DJs can change and adapt to any situation. I am not a great promoter or a great DJ.

Also, complaining about Yuma is another thing that needs to stop. Yuma has survived by being indispensable. That is more than I can say about the gothic community in Santa Cruz at this point in time. In a way, this is everybody's fault... but not everybody has the desire nor capacity to change things.

I'm glad Freddy is doing what he is doing. I hope he continues to promote change through this actions. The scene will adapt and evolve to survive. We will have a stronger/better scene when it does adapt.

Why am I not angry at Freddy? Because it was in his very nature to do what he has done and people needed to see his true colours. Before I started Defiance I turned-down an agreement with Freddy that would have kicked most of the people I didn't like out of scene - people who were important and integral to its workings. I've always known him to be unethical when he feels he has the upper hand in a relationship and has nothing to lose. Hopefully, some of you don't see him for the saint you thought he was a while ago.

LEADERSHIP.

There has been a clear lack of leadership. We all know this and I have discussed this privately with many people on this list, so let's stop lying to ourselves in public. The lack of leadership is no one person's fault, but it is a statement of the people running things. People were simply unable to handle the current situation as it unfolded, and here we are.

MY thoughts on meetings.

I'm not going to attend any meetings because I'd have nothing positive to say to a majority of people in charge. Even then, if anyone wants my general advice, or my help as a DJ, or my help as a booking agent for any number of labels in the genre, my number is easily available. Obviously, they do not want my help, which has been great for me since I wanted to focus more on managing signed acts, and working on bigger productions outside of the state. It is somewhat sad because there have been many things I could have done here, but without an equal in the scene now, there is no one with whom to work who I would respect... unless somebody had the balls to drop the drama/bullshit and be on the level with me.

That is positive. That means things are fine without me and that is good.

COMPLACENCY in the scene and participation.

I have never been a firm believer that everyone should have a say in things. Some people have *stuck* around this scene for years without a single idea of their own and with NO leadership skills. These people aren't deserving enough to participate in new projects since they've been leeches. They've tried the same, boring crap for years and have expected different results from failed/outlived ideas.

These people have been instrumental in fostering a community where stagnation and stale thoughts became tolerated. Do you want to truly change things in this community? Then STOP TOLERATING the same people who brought the current situation into existence. Yes, some things are out of our control. Yes, we must pick our battles wisely. Some forms of malignancy aren't worth the time it would take to expel them from the scene... but others are.

WHAT needs to happen.

Scenes grow weak when there is too much inbreeding and the bloodlines grow thin. An easy way for a bloodline to grow thin is to have the old timers enforce their will in the name of democracy.

I'm a big fan of microcosms. As a scientist, microcosms are essential to life. As a promoter, they are essential in breeding new ideas.

This scene needs a revolution. It needs strong people with new and beautiful concepts who won't stick to old and tried ideas. Here's a hypothetical....If there's a group of them who wants to meet alone with Freddy and convince him that they have a better night, can run it more effectively, and kick every current DJ/promoter in the scene out and form their own coup... you know what? That may be enough of a statement to get people EXCITED again!!!!

FINAL comments.

FINALLY, if new people come up with new ideas, then the last thing they need is some of us old folks around... looking over their shoulders, and exerting our will over them. If they are smart they'll learn from the mistakes of the past.. they can always call us if they want to hear stories about what does/doesn't work. If a new group wants to try something new and it works, let's leave them alone. Let's stop the inbreeding and the all of junk that goes with it and let them bring something wonderful into existence.

In summation, the scene will go on WITHOUT US. When it does, we can all be assured of its true strength.
--G.Ð.

We had a good a very productive meeting yesterday before the start of the Box
and a lot of energy and enthusiasm we generated, with people committing
to furthering ideas to bring new energy and communal involvement in the scene.

Specifically, we talked about
1) Firstly and importantly, Brynn and Julian who are our fearless leaders at the BOX
want it to be known that these meetings are to promote the scene and are not
specifically about the BOX. They were both there and are interested in being open
to all ideas and they are also in charge of the club.

Please let's give them (and SYNDAEL and SAM of REVENANT) our suggestions and ideas about how to grow the scene and make
the entire scene more populated and more successful.

Let's also support their leadership as well, as they are always were the buck stops and they
are putting in the lion share of all teh work that is done for these two clubs.

2) some new decorations for the club (which are pending until Brynn and Julian
see some concrete examples). There was a lot of good input from various people
about how to incorporate new decorations that could utilize some of the intense
creativity that abounds in our community and how to make them 'Box Specific'

3) We made plans to make a new flyer that can be distributed at other clubs and
specifically, at the University and Cabrillo colleges when they are back in session.

4) I proposed and will manifest a new Annonymous CarPooling scheme designed to
encourage people to reach out to people for carpooling situations from Monterey, San Jose,
SF and Oakland to Santa Cruz, and from Santa Cruz and other places over to Satori in San Jose,
Death Guild, Meat, BAGG and other appropriate venues in the Bay Area.

5) decision to reach out to local newspapers and entertainment magazines (gootimes, sentinel, metro, UCSC student guide,
etc.) to try and popularize the scene.

6) If Krelu, Alice, Gavin, Shosh, Sam, Jeremy, Rodent , Brynn, Julian, and the talented artist with the doll in the box idea
whose name I missed and anyone else attending would be so kind, could you finish up this list of what was covered.
I"m making this list after performing twice at the Cabrillo Music Festival and partying vigorously two nights in a row at
Revenant and the Box (both of which were very successful and well attended, I'm very happy to say)?

It was a good meeting and I, personally, felt happy that there was so much energy up for the tasks at hand.

One of the people who called this meeting originally was angry that it was cancelled
so I wrote them at SCGoth at yahoogroups (the big brother of this site here at tribe.net)
to explain why the decision was made and why it was, specifically not an elitist one
as they had charged. Below is that letter if anyone is interested in reading it.

Also , at the bottom of that letter I made a call for a meeting to occur from 8:30-9:30
p.m. at Pergolesi's next Sunday before the BOX begins, specifically so that all the people who would
attend from out of town (and that includes the majority of our DJs and the leaders of our scene)
can attend without having to make a second costly trip from Monterey, San Jose or points north.

It would be good to hear from people if this will work for them.

yours, in the interest of growing our scene in the most egalitarian way possible.

Rick Walker

ps here's that explanation ;

Dear redtheblacknight (and it would be
good to know who I'm actually writing as you didn't sign
your post and I can't honestly remember who you are from your
email address alone),

I'm sorry that my post angered you as much as it did.

It certainly wasn't my intention.
Please bear with me a second and listen to the reasons why I made it
(and stand by it). I hope you'll feel less reactive once you have heard me explain why I cancelled the meeting.

I promise you that noone is trying to steamroll you by making this decision.

I was specifically responding to numerous
complaints from many regular Box attendees about the lack of
publicity about both the meeting called and I had Brynn's aggreement
and wish that the meeting be called off so that we could establish
one later on that has a better chance of getting more input from
the entire community (the intention here is far from elitist I hope you can understand).

The fact of the matter is that though the original meeting
and this subsequent one may have been planned in advance, there
was very, very little notice of the events for either meeting in
official forums.

Several people, including longstanding DJs in the scene and myself who humbly moderates the two SCGoth groups and tribes were unable to attend either meeting and had no voice in when a convenient mutual time could be found to have one.

Most people I talked to just didn't have time clear their schedules to attend the meeting so it was quite obvious that there wouldn't be a strong consensus at the second meeting, just as there wasn't a complete representation of the community at the first meeting.

This is far, far from elitist.

I talked to Brynn outside the Box this past Sunday (learning for the first time that the meeting was the next day for the second time in a row) and was critical of the lack of publicity for both meetings.

He told me at the time that he did not call the meeting and that he actually would be relieved if it were cancelled.

Since it didn't have a chance of having full representation and it wasn't publicized well at all; Since a few members of this community who live in other cities but have nonetheless contributed greatly to this scene by both DJing and providing the initial impetus to move the BOX to Sundays (to avoid conflicts with DeathGuild in the City on Mondays) WE made a decision to postpone this meeting for the sake of the community, NOT for some hidden elitist agenda as you contend.

The intent was to get FULL representation so that we can figure out how to make this community stronger.

I'm sorry that you were angered by this and feel bullied by the decision, but there is no elitist conspiracy going on.

As a matter of fact, since the official reins of the club were left in the hands of both Julian and Brynn by Sean before he passed, fate has had it so that both Julian and Brynn have had major work conflicts and changes happen in their lives (new jobs, et. al.)that has frequently drawn their attentions away from the Box.

Julian has been so busy with the heaviest work of his busiest season that he wasn't even able to post when the whole Sunday move controversy went down.

This has resulted in there being a strong lack of publicity about major changes occuring in the club and also the attempt to have some community input in where we are going and how to help grow this scene so it can be healthier than it can be.

All of this is completely understandable and unavoidable and I , in
no way wish to appear critical of Julian and Brynn. I'm not and they both know how much support I have for their difficult task.

We've had major shakeups in our scene in the past three months with Sean's passing, the move to Sunday's, the insecurity about why those changes were made, miscommunications about our status at the club and all the insecurities that has caused.

What is obviously needed (and this seems to be a universal consensus) is that we need more focus in deciding what to do with the club. We need more input from more community members about how to decorate it, how to have better outreach, how to address ideas about how to change the music at the club to better represent everyone's interests, and all the other things we can do as a community
to make the club stronger and last longer.

But all of this won't be effective if we have poorly publicized meetings that don't draw ALL the people who are most likely to
contribute (whoever they are-------and trust me, you'll never meet a more community minded, egalitarian than myself........just ask around if you think differently).

I propose, precisely because a lot of people have to drive to Santa Cruz to attend (and that means almost ALL of your current DJs--cause I'm a local boy and can walk there) and because gasoline and time are both precious in everybody's busy lives, that we have a meeting from 8:30-9:30 at Pergolesi's this coming Sunday night.

If you truly care about the community and you aren't just coming from a bitchy place as you wrote, redtheblacknight, surely you can put
aside your irritation and come to this meeting (if enough people
agree that this is a good idea).

The goal is the best representation that we can have in this scene, because we'll all be happier if we feel like we have a voice in it.

Why doesn't everyone post and say whether they could make such a meeting.

yours, Rick

SC GOTH PLANNING MEETING CANCELLED OFFICIALLY

With all due respect to the person who called the meeting
to help plan the future of the Santa Cruz Goth Scene at Pergolesi's tonight:

The meeting is officially cancelled.

I talked to Brynn tonight at the Box and expressed the opinion
that the SC GOTH PLANNING MEETINGS have both been scheduled at the
last minute without consulting anyone's schedules
and, consequently, have not been attended with several of the most
prominent members of the ongoing SC goth community in attendance.

Brynn said that though he and Julian had nominally been
tabbed as the succesors to our beloved Sean "Gobo" Keily
that neither one of them had called the meeting for tonight at Pergolesi's
and that he noted (as did I) that the meeting was inconvenient for several
people who should be in attendance.

Given that several people integral to this scene don't even live in Santa Cruz, we made a decision tonight to
cancel this meeting and reschedule it for 8:30 p.m. promptly at Pergolesi's one week from now on Sunday night, August 3rd (the night of the Box).

Because gas has become so expensive: because many people have to travel from out of town (and even as far as San Francisco and Oakland) to attend such a meeting, we would like to
give everyone a full week to make plans (or even to reschedule , if necessary due to unavoidable conflicts in scheduling) so that
we have the best representation of our entire community at this meeting.

We would also like to formally ask that all future meetings are all well publicized (on both this forum and the scgoths@tribe.net forum (where an additional several hundred SCgoths reside) and scheduled with two weeks notice so that all relevant parties may attend.

Thanks to the best wishes of the person who called this meeting in the first place and please let us know if this
Sunday, 8:30 p.m. will work for everyone.

With due respect to all the people who truly wish this community
to grow and prosper in Santa Cruz.

I have never been to burning man before but always wanted to go. The problem is that my closest friends are computer hermits, married, or hate events like burning man so going with them is out of the question. Furthermore because I have not attended a burning man before I have absolutely no idea what to bring to it or how to prepare for it. I have not bought tickets yet because I have no idea if I will even be able to go however I have noticed that there are still plenty of them on ebay so I doubt that will be a problem.

If a group takes me in I can bring lots of booze and beer, enough to share with the entire group and perhaps some greenery if need be. I can even share driving duty there and back if they need me to.

THE AFTERPARTY!!!

we have just secured the ol factory cafe (www.olfactorycafe.com) in sand city from 11p-4a

they will be offering a wine/beer bar, coffee/tea bar and midnight breakfast

this is a beautiful space, and as it stands, we dont have any issues with fire spinning in front of the venue - there is a residential house across the street, so if they get fussy with sound, that might be our only problem - otherwise, this whole area is industrial

lets support our burner-friendly businesses by taking the party to the ol factory cafe!!!

this is about a mile and a half from the beach burn, so its a totally walkable distance if you are too drunk to drive!!!

ALSO!!! dont forget www.mpyreburn.com to make your donations - or just bring 10$ per person to the event - the more people that do their donations ahead of time, it helps us plan on how many people are going - all 10$ donations get some REALLY GROOVY SCHWAG!!!

In Defense of the BLUE LAGOON, Freddy, the owner and DJ YUMA from a former sceptic

I had a really good, long talk with Freddy, the owner of the BLUE LAGOON (as well as Yuma) today.

In that talk I changed most of the angry assumptions that I and most everyone in our scene had made about the current switch to Sundays; conflicts with the pre-booked live rock bands and Yuma's theme night, MAYHEM.

This will take a bit of explaining, but please bear with me.

If you don't want to read the long explanation of why almost all of our assumptions were initially incorrect, please let me assure you
that

1) Freddy really values our scene and considers us to be family as we come close to celebrating our tenth year being hosted by the Blue Lagoon.
2) He also said that he agreed with Grey, myself and the current DJs in our reasons for wanting to move the BOX to Sundays so that it would cease to conflict with DEATHGUILD in San FRancisco.
3) He also said, unequivocally that there is not to be a continuing and potnetially competing theme night (MAYHEM) on Mondays as we had
assumed initially
4) Several bands had already been contracted to play on Sunday nights, a committment which Freddy felt compelled to honor. They have been booked for months before we made our request to change nights.
5) Freddy has assured me that once those final committments are honored that we will have Sundays as our own without fear of double booking.

Essentially, we got every single thing that we had hoped for.

Because of Sean's passing; the passing of the guard to the people he put in charge of the club (Julian and Brynn); lagging attendance and
changes in our entire goth/industrial scene (all over not just California but the whole planet), most of us were really insecure when these changes occured.

I, myself, assumed that YUMA had engineered the change to launch a competing club (untrue as it turns out and in an email message I recieved from him, he assured me that he was fully committed to the BOX's continued existence and really happy that we are at the club and has not intention of trying to 'take over'......I believed him, completely and appreciated his taking the time to write me and to have Freddy call me personally)

.........
I realize now that we all made a lot of assumptions that were reasonable to make without communicating with the principals:

I, like most people, assumed that we were of grave danger of losing our home at the BOX. I was wrong as it turned out.

I, like most people, assumed that the first conflicts with live bands playing indicated an insensitivity by Freddy and the Box to our entire scene. I was wrong as it turned out.

I, like most people, assumed that when Megabyte Mike posted about Yuma's MAHYEM even of electro clash on the previously abandonded Monday night, represented an attempt to take over our scene.
I was wrong as it turned out.

**********
In conclusion, I can tell everyone that I think we could not have had a better turnout of our situation with the BOX.
It shocked me to be completely honest, but Freddy was extremely
sweet when he talked to me today. I did not in any way, have a sense that he was being disengenuous, either.

He said that he loved us and considered us family.

That's quite a thing to say by any club owner, and it is backed up
by the fact that we've had the longest running home for our Goth scene of anything in the Bay Area (except for maybe Death Guild).

**********
So, as much as I dig Cynergoth, I do NOT agree with her that the Blue Lagoon has fucked us over and needs to be abandoned.

On the contrary, I think that given diminishing numbers at the club in the last couple of years, it's pretty damned amazing that
Freddy, Yuma, Sal, Meghan and all the people at the Blue have such affection for us and actively want to see us succeed.

Our whole scene is facing a challenge. I was just in London and the scene there is not NEARLY as good as it is here.............They have gone to Rave/Techno half of the night in the remaining weekly Goth club in the city (that's of 9 million people, folks...........the UR location of Goth in the world)

So, do we have work ahead of us if we are to try and increase our attendance and breathe new life into our scene...........
YES, by all means.

And that dialogue, I believe should exist here on this forum and also
at Tribe.net where there are several hundred SCGoth members (and I'll cross post both places from now on).

So, I'll see all of you beloved people Sunday at the Box with bells and whistles on.

And to the people who have been very vocal on this list but haven't been to the club in a really long time, I would highly
encourage you to come back and become active again in this
community.

Let's put aside our past hurts and be what this community has always been: Dark, Sexy, Creative, Friendly, Passionate and Stompy Boot
Dance Crazy.

love to you all (even the cynical ones),

There will also be painters and airbrushers and dancers all
performing and creating while I play so it should be

This is simply my opinion, and you are all welcome to disagree with me on it, but... these are based off some observations I've had over awhile.

First off, I want to be the first one to say that, I think the scene is pretty much dead -- atleast in Santa Cruz. I haven't seen any newcomers to The Box in awhile, and when there are newcomers, they are mostly from out of the Santa Cruz area. There have been many attempts at trying to get newcomers, but these attempts have pretty much failed. Hell, no one is even going to UCSC to promote anything at The Box. When was the last time you even saw a flyer for The Box too? If at all, the flyers are all inside The Blue Lagoon and never break away outside.

Secondly, The Blue Lagoon OBVIOUSLY doesn't want us. They have done everything in their power to squash our night, and are becoming effective at it. I'm pretty sure Freddy doesn't want to say it, but it is pretty obvious he wants to get rid of us, and in a sense I can't completely blame him for this. From a bar owner's standpoint, The Box hasn't been as financially viable or sustainable as it may have use to be. Which leads me to another point which can tie some of this together...

A lot of the people who have been coming to The Box have grown up and moved on! We are no longer kindergoths, we are grown-up and eat cereals like Total (mmmm high in fiber!) While they don't want to abandon the sense of community they are in and are still strongly supportive of it, we have people commuting as far as San Francisco to keep supporting a scene which is slowly dying. These people have grown to move on to jobs in a big tech sector in San Jose, to move on to a bigger creative hub like San Francisco. So, what exactly is SC Goth then suppose to be when we have these people traveling so far creating it? "Strange Commuting Goths?" While sure there are still a handful of people who still live in Santa Cruz that attend, the majority of long term supporters have lived outside Santa Cruz.

Now, with all these goths commuting from afar down to Santa Cruz for one night a week, this can add up quite a bit. Gas prices being what they are, and the economy being in such a poor state either discourage people from traveling down, or from purchasing drinks. While I think the change from Monday to Sunday was a good idea... I think it has pretty much become too little too late since, even if The Box were to stay on a Monday night, Deathguild is 70 miles in one direction, and visa-versa.

I can't say I'm not guilty myself for furthering the decline of the SC Goth scene either. I was planning to travel down to The Box tonight, but with this whole double booking that occurred, carpooling with someone who was going to DJ there is pretty moot.

What I can say, is that we need to focus and grow on our strengths, which are good ones! We have a strong tightly knit community. While we may not see each other as often as we live despite financial issues or drama, we are always united. We have this incredible power of community, and we haven't learned to properly focus or utilize this power. We've been trying all these different things to help the community other than cater to it. The Box isn't the community, we are. So even if events like Revenant are to go, or even if The Box were to go, we are always united as a community.

It seems that the management at the Blue Lagoon has booked a set of bands on the "Black Room" side of the club tonight. Yes, tonight, which is our inaugural Sunday night. This is both irritating and confusing as we don't recall any mention of bands being booked tonight and would not have agreed to start having the Box on Sundays on a night that the whole club was not available to us.
Regardless, we will present the Box tonight on the "White Room" side only. DJs 7sins and Shadow Angel will be spinning goth club classics and your more recent favorites starting @ 10pm.

We, the staff of the Box, urge you to come out and show your support!

A poor showing tonight will only reinforce the impression that we are incapable of sustaining even a single room and make it harder for us to justify to the Blue Lagoon management that we have a viable scene in Santa Cruz. There will be opportunity to express your dissatisfaction with the situation in time. For now, please, come out and support the Box as we begin anew on Sunday nights.

The Changing Goth Scene

I'm writing in response to something that Char just wrote in.

She said,
"I stopped going to the Friday night events because it was just weird to
say the least. Friday nights didn't seem very "Goth" at all. It had
spooky qualities for sure, but the majority of the evenings I
attended seem to invite a very odd mix."

You are absolutely right Char (and I've missed you a lot in the scene in the
last couple of years), the scene has really changed a lot.

There are many reasons for that, but one of the largest reasons that I see for
the change has to do with the artists and the DJs who play them.

Originally, Goth music was a specific reaction to two prevalent forms of music
that the Goths found alienating: Disco and Punk.

The murky vocals, dark themes and drums and guitars drenched in reverb were
antithetical to dance music.

But like all music forms and communities, times changed, so that, by the
beginning of the new millenium, a very strong world wide Goth/Industrial
community had
arisen that celebrated dancing.

Over time, though, as I see it, there have been fewer and fewer specifically
Goth oriented bands and more and more bands that fused Goth themes with Euro
Techno
beats and Industrial and EBM styles which were a lot harder and a lot less
melodic.

I happen to like those newer styles as much as I like Goth, but the older
school Goths began to drop out of the scene 4 or 5 years ago and all the newer
bands
were much harder, much more oriented towards industrial, ebm and electronic
dance
forms.

Again, I like all these developments but I have noticed a very strong set of
phenomenae that made the entire scene decline world wide.

As the music got harder and harder and less melodic (put on your stompy
boots!!!) less and less women started coming to the scene and attendance in
general
declined.

Additionally, scenes all over the planet became as fixated on the DJ as they
did on the artists. Less and less all original Goth music was being composed
and a lot of it that was wasn't favored by the prevailing DJs.

I began to notice that local goth bands had a harder and harder time either
playing live in the scene or being played by DJs.

Technologically, the music became so sophisticated (with the lion share of
bands being one person , computer oriented groups) it became increasingly
difficult for
local bands all over the world, to compete sonically, with the sophisticated
computer
driven music.

Again, I like computer driven music so I'm not complaining here, but I
definitely see a trend that has occured everywhere I've travelled as well as in
the Bay Area
and in our own beloved Santa Cruz scene.

Add to this that the demographic of the scene has gotten older and older with
less and less young people entering the scene.

Add also to this, the fact that other forms of music that were not specifically
goth (from punk to emo to industrial to euro pop to even straight rock and roll
bands)
began adopting the look of goth without having any of the aesthetic sensibility.

When I heard of AFI's new gothier album I was intrigued and they sure looked the
part. Boy was I dissapointed when I heard the music which didn't seem dark at
all.

All of this has watered down the scene and caused it to dwindle.

*********
I just talked with a young goth in one of the dozen or so Goth/Industrial/Cyber
oriented clothing stores in Camden Town (which is probably the largest Goth
clothing
center on the planet).

I told him that Santa Cruz, with a whopping population of 50,000 people had 5
club nights a month with several hundred people on the Goth lists at Yahoo and
Tribe.net.

I said it was sad that we had so few clothing opportunities and that most people
had to pay lots of money or do online purchasing to get new gothwear.

He said what was really sad was that despite the explosion of goth oriented
clothing stores in Camden town that the London scene was dying rapidly and that
there
was only 5 events in the entire city a month that were consistent (and only one
weekly
one). That's for the birthplace of Goth and the center of Goth fashion on the
planet.

Later that night (after seeing a completely abysmal reunion show by My BLoody
Valentine) we ran into some young punks who took us all the way across London
to the
only weekly Goth night that still exists.

The club was really cool.........very dark and industrial looking in a really
ratty old building. It had three different rooms in it and a fair amount of
people.

But I was shocked at what was being played. There was very, very little Goth
music being played. The mix was about 50% EBM or Dance Industrial and 50%
straight
techno music.

People dressed in Goth and Industrial outfits (not even all that snazzy for all
the great fashions available in London) were on the dance floor and half of them
were
dancing with glo sticks as if they were at a Rave.

I laughed because that's what I used to do all the time at the Blue but I was
always a bit of an oddball doing it and I missed the dayglo Rave scene because I
was so
deeply into Ethnic fusion music for all the time it was happening.

But the thing that struck me was that our scene was actually a hipper scene and
a lot more Gothic in feel than this club which is the last remaining weekly club
in
London.

Sooooo, longwindedly, the scene is changing Char but there are still people
that come to the events and put there energy into it regularly.

You haven't been for so long that you haven't kept up with all the new people in
the scene
.
Knowing you, I honestly think that if you came more frequently, you'd get to
know these people who are a little newer to the SC scene but who have also
formed the
backbone of it........the very people who are keeping the scene alive.

Come on out again and let us all introduce you as the newbie you'll appear to be
to a lot of people.

and lastly, to our dedicated DJs.....................my gratuitous advice is to
start figuring out how to appeal to the Swirly goth portion of our scene a bit
more than we
have.............start figuring out how to start attracting women back to the
scene.

In my estimation, we need a lot more Yin energy in the scene if it is not
going to just dry up and fizzle out.

No matter what you do, though.............I'll be out there carrying the flag
for the scene because I love it.

We will no longer be in competition with Death Guild, several weeks out of the year the following Monday is a holiday which makes Sunday a weekend night, and it's generally more acceptable to be tired at work on a Monday than a Tuesday.

The timing is strange, with The Box moving to Sundays and Revenant losing it's spot at the Blue coinciding with Sean leaving us. We were told we were being moved the Monday before he passed, and Revenant the week before that. So in defense of Fred (who owns the Blue) who is shuffling things to make the most of the declining economy, these changes were not due to Sean's passing.

We had requested this move about six months ago, at the same time we took away our cover, so when we were given the choice between sharing the Club on Monday nights with a different set of normal DJs in the front room, the choice was clear. However, we will still have to share the night occasionally with off-genre touring band, but if we get the crowd large enough and they protest these bands loud enough we can probably get the Blue to reconsider.

This next month is going to be a period of adjustment for everyone, so we ask you all to bear with us through the transition. Nobody want's the SC goth scene to die, and this is a good opportunity to breath new life into it. We would love to hear ALL of your thoughts/suggestions about improving The Box.

Thank you all for your continued support!
Disconnect & The Box

Could be interesting!

Here's a bit of a press release that came out recently as well:

"Hello everyone. I’ve waited a LONG time to be able to make the following announcement: as of right now Nine Inch Nails is a totally free agent, free of any recording contract with any label. I have been under recording contracts for 18 years and have watched the business radically mutate from one thing to something inherently very different and it gives me great pleasure to be able to finally have a direct relationship with the audience as I see fit and appropriate. Look for some announcements in the near future regarding 2008. Exciting times, indeed."
